What does it mean to be board certified in facial plastic surgery? The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) certifies a facial plastic surgeon. In order to be certified by the ABFPRS, the physician must already be board certified by either the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Otolaryngology, the specialty addressing surgery of the head and neck. The facial plastic surgeon has spent five to seven years in post-graduate surgical training. This includes one to two years training in general surgery and at least four years of specialty training in head and neck and facial plastic surgery. Dr. Becker is not only certified by, but also serves as a member of the ABFPRS and participates in the examination process.
Who is a good candidate for facial cosmetic surgery? Men and women of all ages have facial cosmetic surgery. Surgery may improve a facial feature of unacceptable size or shape… rejuvenate premature signs of aging…and bolster self-esteem. Dr. Becker has done facelift surgery on patients from 38 to 89 years of age.
Will facial cosmetic surgery give me an artificial look? Modern surgical techniques have made the "stretched" look a thing of the past in the proper hands. Today's procedures tighten deeper layers of facial tissue as well as skin, yielding a natural appearance.
Will facial cosmetic surgery leave visible facial scars? Facial plastic surgeons are skilled in placing and closing the surgical incisions in a way that minimizes obvious scarring. Most scars fade to fine white lines that disappear into natural facial creases.
Can ordinary people afford facial plastic surgery? People from all walks of life are having facial plastic surgery today. Many people consider the cost an investment in themselves, their future happiness and well being.
How long before I can go out in public after surgery? The healing period for facelift and forehead lift is approximately two weeks. Much of the swelling that may occur resolves within this period and discoloration can be effectively camouflaged with cosmetics. Eyelid surgery recovery time is typically one to two weeks.
Do facelifts have to be repeated every few years? The excess skin that is removed during a facelift does not return, so you will look younger than you would have without surgery. The skin does continue to age and aging changes will continue to occur.
Where is the operation performed? The surgery is performed in the operating room at our Center. This operating room has earned the certificate of approval granted by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). The AAAHC Certificate of Accreditation is considered a benchmark of quality and ensures that a facility is committed to providing quality patient care.
Who administers the anesthesia? The Center's anesthesiologists are provided by Anesthesia of Indian River, a group practice of physicians who combined have more than 100 years of experience in their specialty. The same doctors work regularly with Dr. Becker at the Center, so they are experienced in the special needs of his facial plastic surgery patients.
What type of anesthesia do you use? Most procedures are performed with a combination of local anesthesia and "monitored anesthesia care", which is heavy sedation that produces temporary memory loss. Because this is not "deep sleep", there are fewer side effects, less discomfort and a faster recovery.
Is facial cosmetic surgery painful? During the procedure an anesthesiologist will be present to give you sedation. This keeps you comfortable and eases the discomfort of the local injections which are given to numb the skin. After the anesthesia wears off, the pain and discomfort is usually mild.
What is laser skin resurfacing? The laser delivers very brief bursts of laser energy to the skin vaporizing fine lines and tightening skin around the mouth and eyes, and wrinkles on the cheeks and other spots on the face that come with age.
What does the skin look like after laser resurfacing? After the surface layer of skin is removed it looks pink at first and then becomes moist and red for about 7 to 10 days. Once healing occurs, the skin will fade to pink and then go back to normal color. This process usually takes a month or two, but can sometimes last up to six months. The pinkness can be covered with make-up.
Does laser skin resurfacing replace facelifts and eyelid surgery? Laser is not a substitute for a facelift or eyelid surgery. They are completely different things. A facelift removes excess skin in the jowl and neck area. Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) surgically removes the fat pads and droopy skin in the upper and lower eyelids. Laser is often used in conjunction with these procedures to minimize lines around the mouth and under the eyes.
