What is follicular unit transplantation? Follicular unit transplantation involves the use of high powered microscopes to painstakingly separate hairs from the donor site into units of one-to-four neighboring hairs that grow well together naturally. This painstaking work means less trauma for the hair follicles and thicker, healthier hair at the new site.
When can I get back to normal? Most patients resume their normal lifestyle the day following surgery. Due to their microscopic size, incisions are barely noticeable and are camouflaged by hair. Follicles will recover and begin to grow new hair in approximately six-to-eight weeks. Vigorous exercise can be resumed within a few days.
How long will it last? Transplanted hair follicles retain the same genetic characteristics as they had in the original donor site at the back of the head, and will never be affected by hormonal changes. Hair will continue to grow one-quarter to one-half inch per month for the remainder of your life, just as it did at the donor site.
What about the donor site? Microscopic follicular unit transplantation enables highly efficient harvesting of hair follicles from the donor site, with very little waste. The minimal area involved is easily covered with existing hair growing farther up on the back of the head.
How many sessions will be required? Minimally 1,000 and up to 1,600 follicular hair units are transplanted in one session, involving as many as 5,000 hairs. While follicular unit transplantation results in a natural-looking hairline in just one session, most patients benefit from one or two additional sessions to achieve their finished desired look. The specific treatment plan will be determined during a one-on-one consultation, taking into account each patient's individual situation and expectations.
Is anesthesia required? Follicular hair transplantation surgery is performed in our high-tech operating room under local anesthesia and mild sedation, if desired. Discomfort is minimal, and there is negligible trauma to the scalp. Following a brief rest, patients go home the same day without a bandage.
Can follicular unit transplantation help women as well as men? Most hair loss in women is distributed evenly over the head - not concentrated in a specific pattern as is the case with men. Follicular unit transplantation is ideally suited for harvesting hair from densely growing areas and relocating individual units as needed through out the scalp area.
